The Gilded History of Tuxedo Park, NY

Situated roughly 40 miles north of New York City, Tuxedo Park became the gated village we know in the late 19th century. Tobacco heir Pierre Lorillard moved to this area from Newport, Rhode Island. He created a resort community, the Tuxedo Club (taking its name from the Lenape word tucsedo, meaning “crooked water”). During the Gilded Age, its residents included J.P. Morgan, Mark Twain and Emily Post.

Around 1886, millionaire resident James Brown Potter introduced an evening outfit involving a tailless black dinner jacket that took the region by storm. This formalwear became known as the tuxedo.

Tuxedo Park incorporated as a village in 1952.
