Summer here in the Hudson Valley is great this year. We are reveling in all the outdoor fun with family and friends that we could not have last year. Propane makes those outdoor get-togethers better, with appliances such as propane grills, outdoor fireplaces, deck and patio heaters, firepits, pool and spa heaters, and insect traps. But don’t let an accident ruin your summer fun. We’ve put together some important propane safety information.

Know How To Store Propane Cylinders

With grilling season in full swing, many people are storing an extra propane tank at home. But when storing your cylinders always keep safety in mind. Store them upright and outdoors. Never store them inside the house or in garages, carports, sheds or sun porches.

Make Room

Make sure that your grill and other propane outdoor appliances are at least three feet away from all doors and windows and 10 feet away from any air intake. That clear space is also needed to keep them a safe distance from deck railings, sidings, outdoor furniture, and anything else that’s combustible. Keep kids and pets away from outdoor propane appliances in use.

Take Care of Propane Outdoor Appliances

Propane equipment must be installed correctly and according to the instructions of the manufacturer as well as propane regulations, codes, and standards. We recommend that you hire trained professionals for any installation. It is important to get your propane equipment inspected and maintained annually in order to catch any issues.

Grill Safely

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, grill fires on average kill 10 people, injure 100, and cause $37 million in property damage each year. Propane grills are safe to operate if you follow some safety best practices.

• It is important to regularly clean your entire gas grill, not just the grates. One in five grill fires is caused by grease buildup inside
• Have a working fire extinguisher nearby when grilling.
• NEVER leave a lit grill unattended.
• You should not use your grill if the starter is broken. Consider buying a model with an automatic ignition.
• Don't use your propane BBQ grill indoors or in any area that is enclosed or not well vented- this includes garage and carport. Carbon monoxide can be dangerous if it gets trapped inside those types of spaces.
