Catskill native Sybil Ludington was a Revolutionary War hero. At the age of 16, she made an all-night ride over 40 miles in Putnam County to alert local militia forces about the British burning a Continental Army supply depot in nearby Danbury, Connecticut.
One of the country’s first original artistic movements, the Hudson Valley School, was created here by Thomas Cole. The painting style was heavily influenced by Romanticism and the works were primarily landscapes of areas in the Hudson River Valley, as well as the Catskill, White and Adirondack Mountains.
